Gearbox Rewards 2026: How to Track Leverage and Credit Account Activity Safely

Gearbox Rewards 2026: How to Track Leverage and Credit Account Activity Safely

Gearbox has never had a points program of its own. For years it was known instead as the place to multiply other projects’ points, by borrowing against a deposit and running ten times the restaking or Ethena exposure through a single Credit Account. That changed in 2026. Gearbox has moved toward curated lending markets and real-world-asset credit lines. Its rewards now mostly come as GEAR or chain incentives paid out through Merkl, not as an airdrop to farm. This guide explains which rewards still exist, how to check them, and the risks that come with leverage on Gearbox.

What Gearbox actually does

Gearbox has two sides. Lenders deposit assets such as WETH, USDC or wstETH into pools and receive interest-bearing pool tokens. Borrowers open a Credit Account: an isolated smart contract that holds the borrower’s collateral together with the borrowed funds, and can only interact with protocols Gearbox has approved. That design is what made Gearbox’s leverage composable. A Credit Account can hold sUSDe, weETH or a Pendle position directly, so it collects whatever that asset earns, including partner points.

Since late 2025 the protocol has run as Gearbox Permissionless. Independent curators, including risk firms such as Re7 and kpk, create lending markets with their own collateral lists and rates, all drawing on shared pool liquidity. The project’s home is now gearbox.finance, and the old gearbox.fi address redirects there. Documentation lives at docs.gearbox.finance, and the old docs.gearbox.fi address forwards to it.

The three kinds of rewards on Gearbox

1. GEAR incentives on Permissionless pools

To start the curated markets, Gearbox allocated more than 15 million GEAR across Permissionless pools, weighted by TVL, and paid it out through dedicated campaigns on Merkl. Rewards build up continuously as you supply liquidity. You can claim them from the rewards tab in the top-right corner of the Gearbox app or on Merkl itself. Because these campaigns are funded per pool and per period, the APR shown in the app changes as campaigns start, end or get topped up.

2. Migration rewards for borrowers

When Gearbox moved WETH and wstETH borrowers from the old v3 markets to Permissionless in October 2025, it offered fixed GEAR payments by account size: 30,000 GEAR for Credit Accounts worth $1k to $300k, 50,000 GEAR for $300k to $1.5M, and 80,000 GEAR above that. Gearbox described it as a two-click move on the Dashboard. It only went through if the target pool had enough liquidity, and it was zero-slippage only when the debt asset was the same. If you moved during that window, the reward should appear in the same rewards tab.

3. Chain and partner incentives

Some deployments carry incentives from outside Gearbox. When Gearbox launched lending on Monad in November 2025, the USDC and MON markets came with weekly MON rewards. Partner points, such as Ethena Sats or ether.fi loyalty points, build up on the asset sitting in your Credit Account and are tracked by that partner, not by Gearbox. In past seasons Gearbox and its partners added boosts on top. Always check whether a boost is still running on the partner’s own points page before you assume it is.

What changed in 2026: the end of looping

In January 2026 Gearbox published “The End of Looping on Gearbox”. The post argues that the old borrow-swap-deposit loop does not work for tokenized real-world assets. Those assets redeem through issuers rather than DEXs, often take days to unwind, and can only be held by whitelisted addresses. Gearbox’s answer is to treat the Credit Account as a programmable credit line that mints and redeems directly with the issuer contract. The first such line went live on Monad, with up to $1 million of credit per user for minting mEDGE.

The homepage now leads with “Long-Term Savings” for passive lenders and “Prime Brokerage” for leverage, aimed mainly at institutional allocators. Retail users can still lend and open Credit Accounts in the markets curators list, but the era of 40x leveraged points campaigns is over. At the time of writing, Gearbox has not announced a new GEAR airdrop, a points season or a retroactive distribution. Anything that claims otherwise should be checked against the Gearbox blog.

On the token side, the GEAR supply has been fully unlocked since July 2024, and the DAO treasury holds more than a third of it. Under GIP-219, a quarter of monthly protocol revenue buys GEAR-WETH liquidity on Uniswap V2. In January 2026 OKX delisted GEAR spot pairs. Gearbox said it chose not to pay market makers to keep exchange volume up. If you plan to sell GEAR rewards, liquidity is thinner than it once was.

How to track your Gearbox positions and rewards

  1. Open the app from the homepage. Go to gearbox.finance and use its “Launch app” button rather than a bookmarked or searched link.
  2. Check the Dashboard. It lists every Credit Account you own on the connected network, with collateral, debt, health factor and current borrow rate. Each Credit Account has its own contract address, so write it down.
  3. Check the rewards tab. Accrued GEAR or partner tokens from Merkl campaigns appear there and can be claimed. Compare the amount with the same wallet’s page on merkl.xyz.
  4. Check partner points at the source. For points earned by assets in a Credit Account, look up the Credit Account address on the partner’s own dashboard (Ethena, ether.fi and so on), not your wallet address.
  5. Track pool positions as a lender. Your pool token balance converts back to the underlying asset plus interest. The supply APY shown on the pool page splits base interest from incentive APR, so you can see how much of your yield depends on campaigns.

Risks specific to Gearbox leverage

  • Liquidation by health factor. A Credit Account is liquidated when its health factor falls below 1, which happens when collateral value drops or debt grows. At high leverage, a small depeg in a liquid restaking token or a jump in borrow rates can be enough.
  • Borrow rates move. Pool utilization drives the rate. If it spikes, a leveraged position that was earning money can start losing it, and incentives may not make up the difference.
  • Exit liquidity. Gearbox’s own post explains that real-world-asset collateral redeems through issuers over days. Unwinding a credit line against those assets is slower than selling on a DEX.
  • Curator risk. In Permissionless, a curator sets the collateral list and limits for each market. Two pools of the same asset can carry different risk because different curators run them.
  • Lender-side risk. Lenders bear bad debt if liquidations fail, and withdrawals depend on spare liquidity.
  • Smart-contract exposure stacks up. A leveraged weETH position depends on Gearbox, ether.fi, the price oracle and any DEX adapter it uses. Gearbox runs a bug bounty on Immunefi, but a bounty is not a guarantee.

How to spot fake Gearbox reward pages

The official domains are gearbox.finance (and the older gearbox.fi, which redirects there), with docs and blog on subdomains of gearbox.finance. The official X account is @GearboxProtocol. Its Telegram is linked from the site footer, and governance votes happen on Snapshot under gearbox.eth. The most likely scam is a fake “GEAR airdrop” or “migration reward claim” page, because both phrases sound believable. There is no new GEAR airdrop to claim, and migration rewards are claimed in the app’s rewards tab or on Merkl. A page that asks you to approve unlimited spending of your pool tokens, or to “verify” a Credit Account with a signature, should be closed right away.

FAQ

Does Gearbox have points?

No. Gearbox pays incentives in GEAR or partner tokens through Merkl campaigns. Points you see on a Credit Account belong to partner protocols.

Where do I claim GEAR rewards?

Use the rewards tab in the Gearbox app or the Merkl app. According to Gearbox’s documentation, rewards can also be claimed on-chain through Etherscan.

Can I still loop restaking tokens on Gearbox?

Some curated markets still accept liquid restaking tokens as collateral, but Gearbox’s 2026 direction is credit lines and real-world assets. Look at the live list of strategies in the app before planning around a specific loop.

Is lending on Gearbox safer than borrowing?

Lenders cannot be liquidated, but they take on bad-debt and withdrawal-liquidity risk. The risk is lower, not zero.

Verdict

If you came to Gearbox for an airdrop, there is nothing of that kind to wait for. The reasons to use it now are leveraged exposure through Credit Accounts and supply yield in curated pools, with incentives that are visible and claimable on Merkl. Watch your health factor and borrow rate, check partner points against your Credit Account address, and treat any “GEAR claim” link you did not reach through gearbox.finance as hostile.

For information only, not financial advice. Leverage can lose more than your initial collateral, and incentive programs can end without notice.
