Morpho is no longer a farm-and-forget points play. It is credit infrastructure with more than $16 billion in deposits, used under the hood by Coinbase, Robinhood, Kraken, Ledger and Société Générale’s digital asset unit. Rewards still exist, mostly MORPHO tokens and partner incentives on specific vaults and markets, but they now run through Merkl rather than Morpho’s own distributor. Many older guides, and many scam pages, have not caught up with that change.
This article explains how Morpho’s lending and vault layers work, where rewards come from today, how to track and claim them correctly, and the risks that are specific to curated vaults.
How Morpho is structured
Morpho separates lending into layers, and you need to know which one you are using to understand both your yield and your risk:
- Morpho Blue (variable-rate markets). Isolated lending markets, each defined by one collateral asset, one loan asset, an oracle, an interest-rate model and a liquidation loan-to-value (LLTV). A problem in one market does not spread to another automatically. Accessible at app.morpho.org.
- Morpho Midnight (fixed-rate, fixed-term markets). Morpho’s newer product for loans with a set rate and maturity. Coinbase has launched fixed-rate crypto-backed loans built on it. It runs through a separate Markets app at markets.morpho.org.
- Morpho Vaults. Pooled deposits that a curator allocates across Morpho markets. The curator decides which markets the vault may use and sets caps. Vaults V2 added a more flexible permission and role system for curators and allocators, plus timelocks on risk-increasing changes.
Most retail depositors use vaults, often through an exchange or wallet that integrates Morpho, without visiting Morpho at all. Borrowers use markets directly.

The MORPHO token
MORPHO is the governance token of the Morpho DAO. It became transferable after a DAO vote in late 2024. Later, Morpho moved Morpho Labs, the company that develops the protocol, under the non-profit Morpho Association as a wholly owned subsidiary, so that the token is the single asset representing the project. The DAO’s stated approach is to reinvest rather than distribute protocol fees to holders.
MORPHO is also the main reward token. The DAO votes on emissions to particular markets and vaults to bootstrap liquidity, and partner projects add their own tokens to incentivize markets that use their assets.
How Morpho rewards work now
According to the Morpho rewards documentation, the distribution system changed in 2025:
| System | Status | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Merkl | Standard for all new reward programs from July 2025 onward, following governance proposal MIP 111, and for existing MORPHO distributions | Morpho app reward display and Merkl’s app |
| Universal Rewards Distributor (URD) | Legacy; the rewards.morpho.org API is deprecated | rewards-legacy.morpho.org for unclaimed historical rewards |
Merkl recalculates rewards off-chain and updates them roughly every eight hours. Rewards are allocated to the address that holds the position. If you deposit through a smart contract that cannot call Merkl’s claim function, rewards to that address may be unrecoverable; Morpho’s docs tell such integrators to contact Merkl in advance.
Rewards are attached to specific vaults or markets and change often. A vault showing a high “reward APR” today may show none next month when a campaign ends.
How to track your vault activity and rewards
- Find the vault address. In app.morpho.org/vaults, open your vault and note its address, curator and the markets it allocates to. If you deposited through an exchange or wallet, check whether you hold vault shares directly or the platform holds them for you.
- Separate base yield from rewards. The vault page shows native APY from borrower interest and any reward APR. Base yield accrues automatically in the share price; rewards need claiming.
- Check Merkl. Connect the same wallet to Merkl to see accrued and claimable rewards for your Morpho positions. Claim there or through the Morpho app’s rewards display.
- Look for legacy balances. If you used Morpho before mid-2025, check rewards-legacy.morpho.org for unclaimed URD rewards.
- Watch curator changes. Vaults can add markets or raise caps. In Vaults V2, risk-increasing changes go through a timelock, so you have time to exit if you disagree. Following the curator’s announcements is part of tracking your position.
- Borrowers: monitor LLTV. Each market liquidates at its own threshold. Keep your loan-to-value well below it, and remember oracles define the price used, not the exchange you watch.

Reading a vault page before you deposit
Because rewards come and go, the vault page itself tells you more than any campaign banner. Before depositing, check four things:
- Exposure list. Every market the vault can allocate to, with its collateral asset and current share of deposits. A stablecoin vault lending mostly against blue-chip collateral such as wrapped BTC or staked ETH is a different product from one lending against newer synthetic dollars.
- Curator identity. Established risk firms publish their methodology and incident history. Compare the curator’s other vaults, too.
- Utilization. Very high utilization means high yield but slower withdrawals.
- Yield source. If most of the APY is reward APR rather than native yield, ask what the vault earns once the campaign ends.
Risks that are specific to Morpho vaults
- Curator risk. Your vault is only as safe as the markets its curator chooses. In November 2025, some curated vaults and markets on Morpho and Euler were hit after Stream Finance disclosed a $93 million loss, which affected collateral such as xUSD and Elixir’s deUSD. The core Morpho contracts worked as designed; the losses came from what curators had allowed into their vaults.
- Oracle risk. Each market uses a specific oracle. A thinly traded collateral with a weak oracle can be liquidated unfairly, or fail to be liquidated in time, leaving bad debt.
- Liquidity risk. When a vault’s markets are heavily borrowed, withdrawals can be delayed until borrowers repay or rates rise enough to attract liquidity.
- Front-end risk. On April 10, 2025, a misconfigured SDK update in the Morpho app pointed token approvals to the wrong contract. A whitehat bot intercepted one transaction and returned the funds, and the update was rolled back within minutes. The smart contracts were not affected, but it shows that interfaces carry their own risk.
- Reward dependency. If a vault’s headline APY relies on MORPHO or partner tokens, your real return depends on those tokens’ prices and on the campaign continuing.
How to avoid fake Morpho claims
- Official domains. Morpho uses morpho.org with subdomains app.morpho.org, markets.morpho.org, docs.morpho.org and rewards-legacy.morpho.org. Look-alikes such as “morpho-rewards” sites or other TLDs are not Morpho.
- Merkl is the claim route. New rewards are claimed through Merkl or the official Morpho app, not a standalone “MORPHO airdrop” page.
- No surprise airdrop. Morpho has not announced a new general MORPHO airdrop. Pages promising one are fake.
- Official X account. Morpho posts from @Morpho. Scam replies under its posts mimic the logo and name.
- Approvals on a “claim”. Claiming rewards transfers tokens to you. If a page asks you to approve spending of your vault shares or stablecoins, stop.
FAQ
Where do I claim my MORPHO rewards?
Through Merkl or the official Morpho app for programs since July 2025. Older unclaimed rewards are at rewards-legacy.morpho.org.
Is Morpho running a points program?
No. Rewards are token incentives on specific vaults and markets, not points toward a future airdrop.
Why did my vault’s reward APR drop?
Campaigns are time-limited and set per vault or market by the DAO or partners. When a campaign ends, only base yield remains.
Can I lose money in a Morpho vault?
Yes. If a market the curator uses accumulates bad debt, the vault’s share price can fall. That happened to some vaults during the Stream Finance fallout.
Verdict
Morpho rewards are real but secondary. The decision that matters is which vault, and therefore which curator, you trust with your deposit. Track base yield in the vault’s share price, claim incentives through Merkl, check the legacy site for old balances, and ignore anything branded as a MORPHO airdrop. The Morpho website and Morpho documentation are the starting points for every link you use.
DeFi lending carries smart-contract, oracle and curator risk. This is not investment advice.
