Axelar spent years on airdrop watchlists, but the most useful thing to know about it now is simpler: its token, AXL, already exists, and the main way to earn with it is staking. There is no points season to grind and no retroactive drop waiting for bridge users. What there is instead is a proof-of-stake network that pays delegators, a community quest program that has handed out small amounts of AXL, and a year of big organisational changes that every holder should understand before locking tokens up. This guide covers how Axelar works, what you can actually earn, what changed after Circle bought the team that built it, and how to avoid the fake “Axelar claim” sites that keep appearing.
What Axelar actually does
Axelar is an interoperability network: a blockchain whose job is to carry messages and tokens between other blockchains. It is built with the Cosmos SDK and secured by a validator set that stakes AXL. When an app on one chain wants to trigger something on another, Axelar validators observe the source chain, vote on what happened, and sign the instruction that executes on the destination.
Three pieces matter for ordinary users:
- General Message Passing (GMP). Lets a contract on one chain call a contract on another. Apps such as the Squid router are built on it, which is why many people have used Axelar without visiting an Axelar website.
- Interchain Token Service (ITS). A framework that lets a project make its token available on many chains while keeping one canonical identity. It is the main way projects deploy tokens through Axelar.
- Amplifier. A newer, more permissionless way to connect chains. Instead of every validator running a node for every chain, separate “verifiers” handle each new connection and bond AXL as collateral they can lose for dishonest behaviour.
Axelar says the network now reaches more than 50 chains and over 1,000 tokens. In May 2026 it launched its own first-party bridging interface at app.axelar.network, starting with nine EVM chains (Ethereum, Base, BNB Chain, Arbitrum, Polygon, Optimism, Avalanche, Immutable and Filecoin). Solana, Hyperliquid, XRP Ledger, Sui and Stellar were listed as next. The official site is axelar.network and the developer documentation is at docs.axelar.dev.

The AXL token and where rewards come from
AXL has four jobs. Validators and delegators stake it to secure the network. Holders vote on governance proposals, including which chains get added or dropped. Cross-chain fees are denominated in it, although app users normally pay once in the source chain’s gas token and conversions happen behind the scenes. And under Amplifier, verifiers must bond it and are paid from AXL reward pools.
Staking rewards come mainly from inflation, which means new AXL is created and paid to stakers. Axelar’s own explanation of the economics is blunt about what that means: people who stake keep or grow their share of the supply, while holders who do not stake are diluted. In a late-2024 post on AXL utility, Axelar said inflation had been cut to about 4.8% after community tokenomics proposals, and quoted a staking APR of roughly 6.7% on its explorer before validator commission. With a typical 10% commission, that worked out to about 6% for a delegator.
Two points about those numbers. First, they move: inflation is a governance parameter and has been changed more than once, and the APR depends on how much of the supply is staked. Check the current figure on Axelarscan or in your wallet rather than trusting a number in an old guide. Second, staking yield is paid in AXL. If the token price falls faster than your stake grows, you lose money in dollar terms. The same post described a proposal to burn AXL fees to offset inflation, but it was a proposal, not a finished mechanism.
The Axelarator quest program
The other earning route has been the Axelarator community program, which the Axelar Foundation launched in February 2024. It ran weekly educational and on-chain quests on Galxe (galxe.com/axelar), gave points for each completed quest plus referral points, and kept a monthly leaderboard that reset each month. The launch post put the budget at more than 6,000 AXL a month, including 500 AXL a week raffled from Galxe quests and around 3,000 AXL a month from partner-backed quests. The top ten on the monthly leaderboard received extra prizes.
These are small, raffle-style amounts, not an airdrop allocation. The Foundation also reserved the right to change the terms without notice. We could not confirm whether the program is still running at the time of writing, so check Axelar’s Discord announcements channel or the official Galxe space before you assume a quest still pays.
What changed in 2025 and 2026
Anyone holding or staking AXL needs to know about the ownership shake-up. On December 15, 2025, Circle, the issuer of USDC, announced an agreement to acquire the Interop Labs team and its intellectual property. Interop Labs was the company that originally built Axelar, and co-founder Sergey Gorbunov was reported to be joining Circle. The announcement said the Axelar Network, the Axelar Foundation and the AXL token were not part of the deal and would continue independently under community governance.
The market did not like that. AXL dropped sharply on the news, and several investors publicly criticised a deal in which the developers’ equity was bought while token holders received nothing. Development leadership moved to Common Prefix, a research firm that had already worked on the network. Its stated 2026 priorities included reviewing incentives, focusing on chains that bring real activity, preparing the network for institutional users, and exploring co-staking with established tokens alongside AXL.
The new direction shows up in the blog and governance record:
- AXL was listed on the Hyperliquid spot market in December 2025.
- Axelar announced integrations with Stellar and Hedera in February 2026, and a Solana mainnet integration in June 2026.
- In May 2026, a governance proposal (number 468 on Axelarscan) asked to discontinue the Flow, Berachain and Plume connections. Axelar said these chains had almost no transfer volume while the Foundation was paying hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to subsidise their verifiers.
For stakers, the practical meaning is that incentives are being reviewed by a new team. Treat today’s staking parameters as something that can change through governance, and read proposals before they pass rather than after.
How to stake AXL step by step
- Get native AXL. Staking happens on the Axelar chain itself. AXL that you bought on an exchange or hold as the wrapped ERC-20 version (wAXL) on Ethereum or another EVM chain must first be withdrawn or bridged to an Axelar address (these start with axelar1). Axelar has published a guide to telling the wrapped and native tickers apart, and mixing them up is a common reason a “stake” button does nothing.
- Use a Cosmos-compatible wallet. Keplr and Cosmostation both support Axelar staking. A hardware wallet connected through Keplr is the safer setup for larger amounts.
- Pick a validator carefully. Look at commission, uptime and voting record on Axelarscan. Axelar validators must also run nodes for the external chains they support, so a validator that misses votes or goes offline can be penalised, and delegators share that outcome. Spreading stake across two or three reliable validators reduces the damage from any single one.
- Delegate and keep some AXL for gas. Leave a small amount unstaked to pay fees for claiming rewards, redelegating and voting.
- Claim or restake rewards. Rewards build up and must be claimed manually, unless you use a service that auto-compounds. Claiming very small amounts often costs more in fees than it is worth.
- Vote. If your validator votes against your interests, you can vote directly, and your vote overrides theirs for your stake on that proposal.
Unstaking is not instant. Most sources, including the chain’s own staking parameters as shown by explorers, list an unbonding period of seven days. During that time your tokens earn nothing and cannot be moved. One older staking-provider guide says 21 days, so confirm the figure in your wallet before you plan around it.

Using Axelar without staking: what bridging does and does not earn
Plenty of readers come to Axelar from the other direction. They have bridged through Squid or another app built on GMP and want to know if that activity counts toward anything. At the time of writing, Axelar has not announced any points system, season or retroactive reward for bridge users. Moving tokens through the new app or through partner apps is a utility you pay for, not a farm.
If you do bridge, a few habits avoid real losses:
- Check which token you will receive. Some routes deliver Axelar-wrapped assets (the familiar “axl” prefix, as in axlUSDC) rather than the native token on the destination chain. Wrapped versions can trade at a discount and have thinner liquidity.
- Read the fee and time estimate. The Axelar app shows the fee, the estimated completion time and the amount you will receive before you confirm. Transfers cannot be reversed once submitted.
- Track transfers on Axelarscan. If a transfer looks stuck, its status page will show whether it is waiting for confirmations, for validator votes or for gas on the destination chain. Look it up there before contacting anyone who claims they can help.
- Watch for chain removals. As the Flow, Berachain and Plume proposal shows, Axelar can stop supporting a chain. Assets bridged to a chain that loses its connection may become harder to move back.
Risks specific to AXL and Axelar
- Inflation and price risk. Yield paid in new tokens does not protect you from a falling market price, and the 2025 acquisition showed how quickly sentiment can turn.
- Governance risk. Inflation, chain support and incentive budgets are all set by proposals. A new development lead reviewing incentives means the reward structure you stake under may not be the one you unstake under.
- Validator penalties. Downtime and missed votes can lead to jailing, and Cosmos-based chains can slash delegated stake for serious faults.
- Bridge and contract risk. Any cross-chain system holds value in contracts on many chains. Axelar’s security depends on its validator and verifier sets behaving honestly.
- Token confusion. Native AXL, wAXL and the various “axl” wrapped assets are different things. Sending the wrong one to the wrong address is a common and sometimes permanent mistake.
Spotting fake Axelar claim and staking pages
AXL is a live, liquid token, which makes it an easy hook for scammers. The usual pattern is a reply under an Axelar post on X promising an “AXL airdrop” or “staking bonus,” linking to a site that asks you to connect a wallet and sign. Keep these rules:
- The real domains are axelar.network, app.axelar.network, docs.axelar.dev and axelarscan.io. The official X account is @axelar. Look-alike spellings and extra words in the domain are red flags.
- Staking never needs a website to “verify” your wallet. You stake from Keplr, Cosmostation or a known staking provider, and nothing legitimate asks for a seed phrase.
- An EVM approval or “permit” signature for wAXL has nothing to do with native staking. A page that asks for one while promising staking rewards is trying to drain the token.
- Quest rewards were announced through Axelar’s Discord and Galxe space. A DM telling you that you have won is not how Axelarator payouts were run.
- Since the Circle deal, scammers have also used “AXL to USDC conversion” as a story. Circle did not acquire the token, and there is no conversion program.
FAQ
Is there an Axelar airdrop coming?
No airdrop has been announced. AXL launched in 2022, and the current ways to earn it are staking and, when it runs, the Axelarator quest program.
Can I stake wAXL on Ethereum?
Not directly. Protocol staking uses native AXL on the Axelar chain. You need to bridge or withdraw to an axelar1 address first.
Did the Circle acquisition change my staked AXL?
No. The deal covered the Interop Labs team and intellectual property, and both companies said the network, Foundation and token were excluded. Staking and governance continue as before, now with Common Prefix leading development.
How long does unstaking take?
The commonly listed unbonding period is seven days, with no rewards during that time. Confirm in your wallet before you rely on it.
Does bridging through Squid or the Axelar app earn points?
Not at the time of writing. No points program for transfers has been announced.
Verdict
Axelar is not a farming target. It is an established interoperability network with a real token whose rewards come from staking. That income is modest, paid in an inflationary asset, and set by governance that is being reshaped under Common Prefix after Circle took the original team. For a holder who already wants AXL exposure, delegating native AXL to well-run validators and voting on proposals is a reasonable way to avoid dilution. For anyone hoping that bridge activity will be rewarded later, there is no sign of that. Stick to the official domains, keep wrapped and native AXL straight, and ignore any page that offers a claim.
